The Sure-Fire Way to Never Mistake a NetSuite Sandbox for a Production Environment Again

NetSuite offers two distinct environments for users: the Sandbox environment and the Production environment. When you have to deal with both NetSuite environments (and are probably trying to move quickly to satisfy the needs and demands of multiple stakeholders), it can get confusing quite quickly. So instead of asking yourself over and over again “AM I IN SANDBOX OR PRODUCTION?!”, here’s the fool-proof way to move between Sandbox and Production without skipping a beat.

What’s the Difference Between Sandbox and Production in NetSuite

The Sandbox environment in NetSuite is primarily designed for development, testing, and training purposes. It provides a separate and isolated space for developers and administrators to test new features, customizations, and integrations without impacting the live data. On the other hand, the Production environment is the live instance of NetSuite where daily business operations, transactions, and data are managed. It is the environment used by end-users to perform their day-to-day activities.

How Can you Tell the Difference Between Sandbox and Production in NetSuite

By default setting in NetSuite, your Sandbox and Production environments look the same, with the exception of the word “Sandbox” next to the NetSuite logo in the top left corner of the Sandbox version. But “Sandbox” is often overlooked, and sometimes we just forget which environment we are working in and make changes to the wrong one inadvertently.

So, instead of wasting minutes (or heaven forbid, hours!) inputting data into the Sandbox, that you thought was Production, or worse yet, deleting several (or several thousand!) critical records in your Production environment thinking it was your Sandbox environment, there’s a quick and easy sure-fire way to know which environment you are working in: Just change the color scheme of your Sandbox environment to a color that is clearly different from your Production environment. Because your eyes are accustomed to seeing your Production environment most often, you’ll instinctually detect the atypical color and know you’re working in a different environment. And because the color selection permeates the entire NetSuite User Interface, no matter what you’re doing, you’ll always know which is which.

How to Change the Color of Your NetSuite Environment

01. Go to Home > Set Preferences

02. Scroll down to Appearance

03. Select the color scheme you’d like to use

There are lots of options, and you can even select from your favorite school colors!

04. Scroll to bottom of page and Save

In the above example, you can see the color scheme is a cool and calm Moss Green. And below, you can see the strikingly different choice of University of Alabama’s crimson red (although the color’s not quite right if you ask us!). Roll Tide for all the Bama fans! Easy, elegant, and foolproof. Now you try it!
